PhD fellow in ethics and artificial intelligence

 

At the University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education, it is available a temporary 100% position as a PhD fellow in ethics and artificial intelligence for a period of 3 years. The position is linked to the faculty's doctoral program, specialization in religion, ethics, history and society. The place of work is Campus Kristiansand and Grimstad. Appointment 01.08.17. The candidate must have a master's degree or major subject with the grade A or B.

 

Today we see a very rapid technological development that raises many new ethical issues, both in terms of impacts and future developments. The PhD position is open to projects that explore today's technological development, with a focus on artificial intelligence. How and what should we think of today's development of artificial intelligence? Is it possible to create artificial intelligence that takes independent moral choices? Is it possible to create moral good robots? The ideal candidate has an interdisciplinary background in both philosophy and artificial intelligence, with an intention to work both on a theoretical and a practical / implementable level. Relevant projects may be within machine ethics, robotics, or artificial intelligence, but also more generally within applied ethics, metaetics, or philosophy, within the described limits.

 

The candidate will work in an ambitious and international research community that offers education in ethics, philosophy and information and communication technology at all levels. The candidate is expected to participate actively on a daily basis in both ethics and philosophy, as well as at the new Center of Artificial Intelligence Research, CAIR, at the University of Agder.

 

The candidate will be supervised by Professor Einar Duenger Bøhn (Principal Leader, Philosophy) and Professor Ole-Christoffer Granmo and Associate Professor Morten Goodwin (Bide Leaders, Artificial Intelligence).

 

Criteria for appointment as PhD doctorate are stated in the  Regulations on employment conditions for posts as postdoctoral, fellow, academic assistant and specialist candidate . The candidate must apply for admission to the PhD specialization in religion, ethics, history and society. The candidate must master English orally and in writing.

Admission is made by the Admissions Committee for teaching and research positions at the University of Agder. The person who has been assigned has the rights and duties according to the guidelines that apply to the position at any time. The position is placed in the National Wage Regulatory Wage Plan 17,515, fellow code 1017, kr. 435,000 bto. pr. year. From the salary, statutory deposits are deducted from the National Pension Fund.
