Lecturer in Architecture Theory

 

The theory of architecture lies in the field of teaching and research between the architectural criteria and the history of architecture. The most important themes of architectural theory are the history of architecture, design theories and methods, architectural research, architectural philosophy, architectural criticism and architectural communication. The theory of architecture is in many respects related to other fields of research, such as art and culture theory, art history, cultural and social policy, history of technology and philosophy. Different cultural, historical and national architectural phenomena are also found to link the foundation of architectural theory.

 

The assignment is contracted and is placed at the Aalto University Lecturer's career system by virtue of their qualifications as a university lecturer or senior university lecturer. The assignment will be completed from 1 January 2018 for a period of 5 years.

 

Description of the task

 

Lecturer in Architecture Theory works in the field of Architecture and Theory and is responsible for teaching architecture theory and architecture writing to the bachelor's, master's and doctoral students of the architecture department.

 

The assignments include teaching the basics of architectural research, counseling for master's and doctoral students, and advising on scientific and journalistic writing. Lecturer in Architecture Theory also participates in the development of teaching, research and doctoral education in architecture and follows the development of teaching, publishing and exhibition activities in the field both in Finland and abroad.

 

Qualifications

 

The Department of Theoretical Architecture requires a doctorate degree in a suitable research field, a university teaching experience, and a diverse and active professional activity in the field of architecture. The pedagogical studies performed are of benefit. The applicant should be familiar with Finnish and Scandinavian architecture and architectural research. The guidance and counseling tasks associated with writing, as well as the development tasks of teaching and research require good oral and written English language skills. Finnish and Swedish language skills are considered to be of benefit.

Salary and working hours

 

Aalto University follows the pay system of Finnish universities. The working hours of teaching staff are determined over a total working time of 1624 hours a year. Possible part-time may be agreed upon with the applicant.

 

Application Process

 

The work group will select from among the applicants those who are invited to visit the School of Arts and Design and to give an educational demonstration in November 2017. The candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the following areas: teaching, scientific merit, cooperative skills and activities in the art or science community. The department's working group will also interview the candidates selected for the extension.
