The Departments of Languages and Literature (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) of the University of Antwerp and the University of Liège University's Montefiore Institute (Faculty of Applied Sciences) have two open vacancies for full-time (100%)


Doctoral fellowships in the field of computer-based learning ("deep vision"), and language technology for the automatic analysis and enrichment of heritage collections


Both positions are part of the INSIGHT project ("Intelligent Neural Systems as Integrated Heritage Instruments"), funded by the federal science agency BELSPO. This project unites academic partners from Antwerp and Liege with partners from the heritage sector (Royal Museums of Fine Arts / Art and History, Brussels). The project is aimed at multimodal applications of deep representation learning to enrich heritage collections and explore new paths in computational art history.


The Platform Digital Humanities at the University of Antwerp addresses various applications of computer technology in the humanities. The CLiPS research center focuses on statistical learning methods and artificial intelligence in language technology. The Antwerp Center for Digital Humanities and Literary Criticism has experience in the application of X technologies and machine-based learning in literature. The Department of Informatics at the University of Liège has built up considerable expertise in machine-based learning with various applications in image analysis (eg, the Cytomine platform for advanced image analysis).


Your assignment

  • You prepare a doctoral dissertation in the field of machine-based learning, language technology and image analysis in the context of heritage studies.

  • You publish scientific articles within the field of the research project.

  • You take limited tasks of education and research support within the relevant departments.


Your profile

  • You hold a Master's / Licentiate degree in a domain related to Digital Humanities, eg Art History, Language or Literature, Linguistics, Image Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, etc.

  • You can submit excellent study results.

  • Last year students can also apply.

  • Foreign students are encouraged to submit their candidacy.

  • In your education you will find the right accents that fit within the vision of educationat the University of Antwerp.

  • Your research qualifications are in line with the University 's policies .

  • You have an excellent command of the (academic) English. A (passive) knowledge of Dutch and French is recommended.

  • The project focuses heavily on artificial intelligence (machine learning), language technology (eg distributional semantics) and image analysis (convolutional networks) in particular: the ideal candidate therefore has proven research experience in these domains.

  • The ideal candidate has proven experience in developing software in languages like Python and is ideally also familiar with deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow or PyTorch.

  • The ideal candidate has demonstrable interest in heritage management (GLAM sector) and art history.
