Duties and Responsibilities


This exciting research post will be located in the UCL Knowledge Lab, a leading interdisciplinary research centre on digital research and design in education whose mission it is to understand and to develop digital technologies to support and transform education, and beyond (www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/departments-centres/centres/ucl-knowledge-lab).

 

We are looking to appoint a Research Associate to work on Embodied Learning for Pre-school Scientists (Move2Learn) - a new NSF/Wellcome Trust/ESRC funded project. Move2Learn is a researcher-practitioner partnership will involve examining how key body-based experiences with museum exhibits help young children express, communicate, integrate, and develop their scientific thinking, to inform our understanding and design of effective embodied experiences for museum exhibits across multiple topics and socio-cultural contexts.

 

The postholder will be expected to conduct literature reviews, contribute to project design, and undertake empirical fieldwork and analysis. The post holder will liaise with the museum partners, organise and run observation studies; undertake observation/video recording of parent and/museum practitioner child interaction with appropriate museum exhibits; undertake interviews and/or focus groups with museum practitioners, parents and young children (3+ years); and administer pre and post test measures of science understanding/attitudes.

 

The post is available from 1 July 2017 and is funded to 30 June 2020 in the first instance.


Key Requirements


Key requirements include, a doctorate (or be close to submission) in Psychology, Learning Sciences, Early Years Education, Human Computer Interaction or comparable research experience.

 

The post holder will need to have an interest in fields of embodiment, early years science learning, digital technologies for learning and design-based research, and/or substantial experience in early years (3+) science learning.

 

The post holder needs to have experience of mixed methods research, with practical experience in undertaking observation studies, conducting interviews and associated analytical procedures, a sound knowledge of techniques for analysing video data, and experience in developing or using observation measurement tools.

 

Proven ability to write and disseminate research findings is essential.
