Three-year Stipendiary Lecturership in English




Mansfield College proposes to appoint a fixed-term lecturer, in association with the English Faculty, to cover Professor Ros Ballaster’s term as Chair of English Faculty Board from 1 October 2017. Applicants should have research and teaching expertise in literature of the long 18th century and specialism in the field of women’s writing and/or feminist criticism is desirable.


The lecturer will teach the following papers: FHS Paper 4 in Literature 1660-1760; FHS Paper 5 in Literature 1760-1830 (see for course details). The lecturer will be expected to undertake undergraduate dissertation supervision in fields that fall within their expertise.


The teaching load for Mansfield College will be 6 hours a week (mainly in pairs and small classes). The duties of the post include: marking essays and internal examinations; organisation; administration (including admissions) and tutorial preparation. For the English Faculty the appointee will be asked to provide 16 hours of teaching (undergraduate lectures and seminars, and/or graduate classes) each academic year, payment for which is included in the remuneration for the post.


The successful candidate will:


a) Have completed or be pursuing a doctoral degree in English Literature in a topic relevant to the teaching range required of this postholder. (Preference will be given to candidates who have, or expect to have been awarded by end of September 2017, a doctorate in a relevant area).
b) Have the ability or potential to be an effective and inspiring teacher of English in the tutorial and seminar context. Proven teaching experience in the period range to be covered would be desirable.
c) Have good communication skills, and sensitivity to deal effectively with any pastoral matters that may arise.
d) Have good organisational skills.
e) Have enthusiasm for involvement with the wider life of the college, including willingness to contribute to outreach and access activities.


Salary: £22,039, with an annual increment. The successful candidate will have the use of a teaching room, will be a member of Mansfield Senior Common Room, including meals, and is eligible for a £500 p.a. research allowance.
