We are seeking a key professorial appointment to enhance academic leadership within the School of Social Sciences and champion its internationalisation agenda. The University of Dundee is a truly global institution with 18,000 students from 145 countries and 3,000 staff from 72 countries. The School of Social Sciences attracts the majority of student applications into the University and is home to 56% of all international students. Currently, we have active partnerships in 25 countries including dual degrees in France, and China.

A defining feature of this Professorial appointment is the role of Associate Dean International (ADI). The ADI is responsible for managing the School’s international strategy and providing leadership in relation to international student recruitment, developing global partnerships, internationalising research and knowledge exchange, and ensuring the wider international relevance of our teaching programmes including transnational education. The Professorial appointment is open-ended and the ADI role is on a fixed-term (renewable) basis for three years. The ADI role has been allocated at 60% in terms of workload, inclusive of a significant amount of international travel, with the remainder of the time allocated to research and some inspirational teaching as agreed with the appointee and in line with School’s priorities. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in successful interdisciplinary collaboration.

The ADI is a vital member of the School Executive, requiring a strategic thinker with the leadership qualities to extend the global reach of our teaching programmes and realise the full-benefits of internationalising the student body. Having extensive international experience and networks is vital and the ability to speak two or more languages desirable. We require an innovator who can lead change and work effectively across teams.

Essential:

  • PhD in a relevant subject and a sustained track-record of research excellence.
  • Experience of leading strategic planning at discipline or School/Faculty levels.
  • Experience of successful international recruitment, conversion activity and partnership building with overseas institutions.
    Understanding of trends in the global higher education sector.
  • Willingness to travel abroad for extended periods.
  • A thorough understanding of Institutional management systems and the higher education sector, including equal opportunities issues.
  • Clear evidence of excellence in University learning and teaching e.g., curriculum and module design and leadership, experience of assessing work and providing feedback to students.
  • Experience of successful supervision of PhD research students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to prioritise and balance competing demands.
  • Commitment to always act in accordance with and promote the University’s values.
    Demonstrated capacity to influence policy.

Desirable

  • Experience of providing advice to external bodies.
  • Experience of curriculum development and review.
  • Experience in development and support of transnational educational programmes.
  • Experience of public engagement – nationally and ideally internationally.
  • Ability to speak more than one language.
